Spanning 160-180 km, Senda Litoral is an ambitious coastal project not just within Spain but across Europe. Run by the Provincial Council in Málaga province, this coastal route links together 14 coastal municipalities with a continuous path for walking and cycling. 80% of the route has been accessible to hikers, already drawing visitors and boosting coastal tourism.

What is Senda Litoral de Málaga: A Must-Experience Coastal Path

What is Senda Litoral de Málaga: A Must-Experience Coastal Path Senda Litoral is a project to develop a coastal path in Spain’s Costa del Sol, connecting Manilva to Nerja. The project is a collaborative effort between various government bodies, aiming to create a long-distance trail while preserving the natural beauty and fabric of each town. It includes Manilva, Casares, Estepona, Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox, and Nerja.

This initiative ties together already existing structures in these areas, like walkways and bridges, with newly constructed paths and wooden boardwalks. The starting point, named zero kilometers, is set at the Balcón de Europa in Nerja, with the route stretching west to Manilva's Castillo de la Duquesa.

Current Status and Progress of the Project

As of now, 90% of the coastal path is completed, while some areas remain incomplete, particularly those with cliffs and narrow passages, like in Torrox. Estepona has been leading development, with 95% of the municipality now connected to the coastal path. Similarly, other municipalities are also progressing. Among them, Casares is said to be the first municipality fully linked to the Senda Litoral. With new funding secured in January for Benalmádena, the authorities expect full completion by the end of 2027 if progress continues.

Experiences and Sights Along the Costa del Sol’s Coastal Path

Málaga province has many beautiful sights, and this coastal path makes it possible to encounter a rich combination of natural and cultural heritage. Hikers and cyclists can experience cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, wildlife, protected areas, and watchtowers from the 14th century.

Among the natural highlights are Artola Dunes near Cabopino, the Guadalhorce river mouth, Vélez river delta, and Mijas’s rocky coastline between Calahurras and Calahonda. Meanwhile, the coastal stretch is also lined with 42 watchtowers, Roman ruins, forts, a lighthouse, and Phoenician ruins, as well as fishing villages.

While such remarkable landmarks await, many hikers also appreciate the simple beauty of the coast from sunrise to sunset. Many who set out on the journey spend their days walking the route, finding cafes or chiringuitos along the way, and stopping for short stays. Along the coastal path of Málaga outdoor activities, walking, and cycling, become a whole other experience. Málaga’s Coastal Bike Paths and Hiking Trails

Málaga’s Coastal Bike Paths and Hiking Trails

The trail is designed for both walking and biking, though certain stretches are better suited to cycling than others.

Torre de Benagalbón to La Cala del Moral is an easier bike path. Starting from the eastern part of Málaga city, the path follows the beaches and chiringuitos lined along the shore. Cycling through, you can reach the laid-back town of La Cala del Moral, with its seaside restaurants.

From Malagueta beach to Baños del Carmen offers views of the port and a public bath as the final destination. As the shortest route, it makes for a perfect introductory ride. On the other hand, from Huelin, west of Málaga city, to the Guadalhorce nature reserve provides excellent cycle path along the promenade. Along the way, the Car and Fashion Museum is worth a stop, and when you reach the River Guadalhorce, you can visit the natural reserve for birdwatching. Further west, Marbella offers another rewarding stretch. Cycling through the coastal path past Puerto Banús, you reach San Pedro Alcántara, where small fishing boats are gathered along the harbour.

When it comes to exploring on foot, the Senda Litoral is classified as a Gran Recorrido, offering varying difficulty levels, making it one of the most rewarding among Costa del Sol’s hiking trails. Also, since the trail is long and the weather can be intense, spring or autumn are the best seasons for walking the route.

Broader Impact of the Senda Litoral on Costa del Sol

Broader Impact of the Senda Litoral on Costa del SolThis Senda Litoral of Málaga is truly an exceptional project. Not only does it bring the entire Costa del Sol together, but it also offers a unique opportunity to connect otherwise scattered sights.

It has the potential to become a new tourism draw offering a different experience. As Málaga is beloved by Americans and many others beyond Europe, it has long drawn visitors seeking sun and beach towns, but with the new walking route, the appeal shifts from beach-hopping to genuine exploration. Visitors do not only stop at one seaside town but rather explore at their own pace, reshaping the coastal tourism landscape.

Moreover, the Senda Litoral is connected to the Gran Senda de Málaga (GSM), a circular inland route and nationally recognised trail for active tourism. This creates year-round demand and draws visitors to smaller towns, offering opportunities to entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and local businesses.

Although there are challenges, areas like Estepona and Benalmádena's newly secured funding show that the project is feasible. With the project nearing completion and already offering this much, this signals a strong opportunity for investors interested in property for sale in Málaga. Whether it is tourism-related real estate or holiday rentals, there is clear potential for growth. Additionally, as the project adds value to the surrounding areas, it is expected to generate significant economic impact along the coast.
