Al Reem Island, in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, lies just off Abu Dhabi Island and has grown into a residential district of towers. The island has its own park, university campus, hospital and international schools, so much of daily life can stay on the island.

Why Buyers Choose Al Reem Island Real Estate

The first reason is position. Bridges connect Al Reem Island to Abu Dhabi Island and its neighbours, and since February 2023 the Umm Yifeenah Bridge has added an 11-kilometre highway link across Umm Yifeenah Island to the mainland. Al Maryah Island sits right next door, and the Cleveland Clinic there is a short drive away.

The second is that the island works as a complete district. Reem Hospital and the Burjeel Day Surgery Center provide care on the island itself. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi keeps a campus here, and families can choose between Repton School Abu Dhabi, GEMS World Academy, which moved to its Najmat campus in 2022, and Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi.

The third is everyday leisure: Reem Central Park for an evening walk, and Reem Mall for the weekly shop, a cinema, and Snow Abu Dhabi, an indoor snow park.

Where to Buy a Home on Al Reem Island, from Shams to Najmat

Start with the district, because Shams Abu Dhabi, Marina Square, Najmat and the towers of City of Lights and the Makers District each have their own character.

Shams Abu Dhabi forms the eastern side of the island. Its best-known buildings are Sun and Sky and the Gate, and at the foot of Sun and Sky, Shams Boutik holds a Waitrose supermarket, pharmacies and cafés. Sun and Sky were among the first large projects on the island, so this is its longest-lived quarter.

Marina Square, developed by Tamouh, dates from the same first wave of building, and along with Najmat it is one of the places where the island's townhouses appear.

Najmat grew around the GEMS World Academy campus, and for families with school-age children that makes it the obvious place to start looking.

The Makers District and City of Lights, a dense cluster of residential and commercial towers, extend the skyline, while Reem Hills and Nalaya are gated villa communities.
